The term ‘junior Ferrari’ was applied to a succession of mid-engined V8 cars emanating from the Maranello factory. They were lauded for their comparatively compliant handling and well-sorted dynamics, coming from a foundation going all the way back to 1973 and the Dino 308 GT4.
But the riposte to anyone who thought Ferrari was going soft came in the shape of this new V8 model, which took on the F430’s mantle as the next generation of supercar challenger - and did so with aplomb. The hard-top Italia, launched in 2009 and its soft-top sister, the Spider, unveiled two years later, were a more radical design departure, which more than hinted at the 458’s renewed sense of purpose.
But it also toted a 4.5-litre V8 engine - on show under a transparent hood just begging to be admired - which readily revved all the way up to 9,000rpm where it knocked out 562bhp, power enough to catapult the car to 200kph (124mph) in just 10.4 seconds. It’s an all-out brilliant car and was among the first to benefit from a new seven-year service programme that’s transferable between owners.
