Bentley FAQs

The history of Bentley is a tale of luxury, performance, and British engineering excellence. Founded by Walter Owen Bentley in 1919, the company initially focused on creating high-performance cars for both road and racing purposes.

Bentley gained fame in the 1920s for its victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it secured multiple wins and established a reputation for speed and endurance. The Bentley Boys, a group of wealthy British motorists and racing enthusiasts, played a significant role in these successes.

In 1931, due to financial challenges made worse by the Great Depression, Bentley was bought by Rolls-Royce, forming Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd. This marked a period of close collaboration between the two brands, leading to the sharing of technology and components.

Bentley continued to produce luxurious and performance-oriented cars throughout the 20th century, with models like the Bentley R-Type, S-Series, and T-Series gaining popularity. In the 1990s, the brand saw a revival under the ownership of the Volkswagen Group, which invested in modernising Bentley's manufacturing processes and design language.

This revitalisation led to the launch of iconic models like the Bentley Continental GT, which helped the brand appeal to a new generation of luxury car enthusiasts. Bentley's lineup expanded to include SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga, further diversifying the brand's offerings.

Today, Bentley continues to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, producing exquisite automobiles that cater to those seeking both opulence and performance. The brand's legacy and heritage remain deeply ingrained, making Bentley a symbol of British automotive luxury and elegance.

Bentley is a British luxury car manufacturer with a complex supply chain for its parts and components. While the final assembly of Bentley vehicles takes place in the company's factory in Crewe, Cheshire, England, the production of parts involves various suppliers and locations around the world.

Many of Bentley's components – including engine parts, chassis components, and interior elements – are manufactured by suppliers located in various countries, who Bentley chooses based on the supplier’s expertise and capabilities in specific areas of manufacturing. These suppliers could be located in different regions, such as Europe, North America, and Asia. The components produced by these suppliers are then shipped to the Bentley factory in Crewe for final assembly.

Bentley suggests a yearly service, or 5,000 to 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. These service intervals include routine checks, oil and filter changes, inspections of various systems, and overall maintenance to keep your car running smoothly.

The recommended service intervals for your Bentley can vary depending on the specific model, year, and driving conditions. Bentley, being a luxury brand, typically recommends more frequent servicing compared to regular cars to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and longevity.

It's important to consult your car’s owner's manual and adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific model and year. Also, if you drive your Bentley under more extreme conditions or if it's a high-performance model, you might need more frequent servicing to ensure optimal performance and safety.

To ensure your Bentley receives the best care, it’s best to have it serviced at an authorised Bentley service centre or a reputable automotive service provider with experience in luxury and high-performance vehicles. This will help maintain the value and performance of your car while ensuring that it receives the appropriate level of expertise and attention.

This will depend on your model and the desired optional extra. We suggest you contact our parts advisors, who will be happy to look into this for you.

Installing Bentley parts yourself can be challenging and is generally not recommended unless you have the necessary technical expertise, tools, and experience working on luxury and high-performance vehicles. Bentley cars are complex machines with advanced technology, intricate systems, and precise engineering, and incorrect installation of parts can lead to safety risks, performance issues, and potential damage to the vehicle.

Using a professional, such as an authorised Bentley dealership or a skilled automotive technician familiar with luxury vehicles, is the safer and more reliable option. These professionals have the knowledge, experience, and specialised equipment needed to correctly install and maintain Bentley parts while preserving the car’s integrity and performance.

Meanwhile, installing parts yourself might also impact your warranty or any potential insurance coverage, as improper installation could lead to complications that might not be covered. When it comes to maintaining and modifying a high-end and complex car like a Bentley, it's generally best to rely on professionals who are trained and experienced in working with these types of cars.

Ask our team and we can help you locate a reputable garage.

Bentley Parts: Background

Bentley ownership amounts to more than a statement of your taste in cars – it also reflects your appreciation of the finest in British automotive engineering. Bentley burst onto the world stage with its five Le Mans race wins between 1924 and 1930, but over the ensuing decades, it evolved to become more renowned for the luxury and almost infinite personalisation options of its models than their out-and-out performance.

Bentley has built most of its models at its factory in Crewe, a central location in the heart of England which has a proud engineering tradition. Bentley Motors was founded just after the First World War, in Cricklewood, north London, and Walter Bentley entered his first car into races in 1922. But those Le Mans victories, by both the 4½-litre and Speed Six models, propelled the company into the spotlight. Indeed, the former was the original vehicle of choice of James Bond in the Ian Fleming novels, although the character rarely drove this in the later films.

The 1929 Wall Street Crash then intervened to scupper Bentley’s long-term plans, and two years later, the company’s assets were bought by Rolls-Royce. In 1933, it unveiled the new Bentley 4½-litre. For the next 71 years, all Bentley parts used inherited or shared Rolls-Royce chassis, and for much of this time, Bentley concentrated on supplying chassis and underpinnings, onto which other coachbuilders added their own bodies.

The site of the current Bentley factory in Crewe, Cheshire, was first used by Rolls-Royce, which intended it to be a back-up production site which could be pressed into use at short notice for building aircraft engines. But after the end of the Second World War, it was reconfigured to make cars, and became the permanent home of Bentley Motors. At this time, Bentley parts and models were made of a rolling chassis, which was then supplied to a coachbuilder chosen by the customer, which would add the interior fittings and body to the customer’s individual specifications.

This method of building was abandoned by Bentley in 1965, when it introduced its first complete model, the T series. The collapse of Rolls-Royce’s aero-engine division in 1970 also brought down the operation, but this was then reconstituted as a separate, independent business until it was bought by Vickers in 1980.

Bentley sales at this time were at a low point, but Vickers set about rebuilding the business by emphasising the sporting heritage of the brand. It started building the Continental in Crewe in 1984, and over the next two decades more than 20 different Bentley models were produced in Crewe.

Today, VW operates the Crewe factory and has sole rights to design, build and sell Bentley parts and models. Recent turbulence has not affected demand for Bentley models, and as a result there is also a healthy demand for older vehicles, and for the required original Bentley spare parts needed to keep them running.
