Nine months from first sketches to the initial rolling off the production line was, at the time of the Maserati GranCabrio's launch, a record short time for even the productive Italians. But its predecessors, the Coupe and Spyder, had been such successes that both a hard and soft-top successor were developed in tandem. However, the hard-top version, the GranTurismo, was given priority, and Maserati threw all the resources it had at the development, to ensure that it could be ready in record time. That involved using the same platform as the Quattroporte, with a slightly shorter wheelbase.
Eager would-be buyers were, however, kept waiting more than another two years for the GranCabrio, which kept the four-seater configuration of the GranTurismo Coupe, as well as the 4.7-litre, V8 engine rated at a maximum of 434bhp. Before this, the only convertible Maseratis had been a couple of coach-built specials made to customers' requirements way back in the 1930s. An enhanced Sport version followed a year later, with the engine gaining an extra 10bhp and torque booted to 380lb/ft, five per cent more than the original GranCabrio.
2013 saw the release of the GranCabrio MC, whose 48mm extra length contained a body with greatly improved aerodynamics, and the engine tweaked for 454bhp, hurling it from rest to 62mph in 4.9 seconds. But the GranCabrio is best appreciated standing still - motoring writers collectively swooned at its stunning lines, especially with the canvas roof folded down. That material was chosen over a solid metal unit so that the owners would be encouraged to dispense with that top at every opportunity, and just let everyone admire it. The overall verdict of Autocar magazine was: "This is a genuine and exciting four-seat convertible É that can be parked next to more expensive machinery and not make you feel inferior in any way".
