It takes some nerve to name yourself after the original meaning of the 'GT' abbreviation as applied to some of the most famous cars in history. But Maserati wanted to make it plain right from the start that this model was built aiming right at the junction between comfort, speed and driver enjoyment. The GranTurismo was even in a hurry to get off the drawing board, as a result of Ferrari pulling a fast one and keeping hold of the original designs for the Maserati Coupe's replacement when it sold Maserati to Fiat Chrysler. That left Maserati without successors to its own Coupe and Spyder models - but its designers donned their sunshades, sharpened their pencils, rolled up their sleeves, and saw the GranTurismo through from drawing board to the first finished model rolling off the production line in just nine months.
Yet the hard-top and convertible GranTurismo stayed in production for 12 years, with more than 40,000 finding homes. Just under two-thirds of these were the former, which had three years head-start over the folding-top model. Pininfarina pulled out an ace with its design work on the GranTurismo, Autocar describing it as "big and ravishingly handsome - everything a GT should be."
A more lavishly-equipped 'S' model followed in 2008, swapping the original car's 4.2-litre engine for a 4.7 V8, making it the most powerful road-legal Maserati produced to date, the power fed through the same six-speed automated manual gearbox as the Ferrari F430. The final verdict comes again from Autocar, which called the GranTurismo "a truly desirable car," before concluding: "For the first time in a long time, you no longer need to make excuses to buy and run a Maserati."
