Although it sits at the base of its range, you won't catch Ferrari referring to its Portofino model as 'entry level'. It's a 2+2 coupe with a folding metal roof, designed to be an approachable way into Ferrari ownership, but with a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which is a shorter-stroke version of the one in the 488 GTB. It went on sale in 2017, and was seen as part of Ferrari's celebrations of its 70th anniversary. A stiffer body - 35 per cent more so than the California which it replaced - quicker steering and weight saved wherever possible all add up to a more nimble package, with a dry sump also encouraging drivers to throw the Portofino at every corner, just as once happened with the 1968 Daytona, on which Ferrari says it based much of this car.
Autocar loved what Ferrari's tuners did with the engine, too, finding its 561lb ft of available torque reserves readily kicking in even from just a modest portion of the useable 7,500rpm. Telegraph motoring writer Andrew English loved the car's gearbox and the response it elicited from the engine: "Downchanges, even in Comfort mode, are like firecrackers going off behind you", he wrote. Before long, the Portofino was quietly accounting for about one in three Ferrari sales worldwide, with more than 70 per cent of its buyers being new to the brand. Within a year of going on sale, the car won the prestigious Red Dot: Best of the Best international design award, the judges being won over by its "uncompromising quality in material and workmanship."
