Intended to occupy the middle ground between the DB9 and DBS models in Aston Martin's range, the Virage instead went on to make a convincing case for itself instead of its supposed inferior sibling. From the outside, the Virage looks like a DB9 that's discovered body-building, making it look sportier, yet without making it look in any way artificially enhanced. A bugbear of the immediately preceding Astons, the iffy quality of the sat-nav system, was addressed in the Virage, while the V12, six-litre engine now put out 490bhp, a figure conveniently bisecting the difference between the DB9 and the DBS, and giving the Virage a 0-62mph capability of 4.6 seconds, and a 186mph top speed - or bang on 300kph in metric numbers.
A sport driving mode deepens the engine note and sharpens the gearbox responses, as well as reducing pedal travel between changes, so the car is perpetually more eager. But more relaxing motoring is at your disposal if you just leave the mode button alone. And despite the big 20-inch wheels, the Virage "rides, steers and drives better than ever", and "there's a lovely, direct feeling to the chassis", wrote Piers Ward of Top Gear magazine. This critically-acclaimed model was also briefly available in a longer-wheelbase version.
