After Ford rode to Aston Martin's rescue, the prestige sports tourer-maker was given a new lease of life. The ultimate expression of this rebirth was the DB9. Sitting on a new platform of bonded aluminium which promised endless variations, few probably imagined on its unveiling in 2003 that fundamentally the same underpinnings would still be seeing use nearly a decade and a half later.
Yet Ford and Aston's relationship wasn't as lucky as this car, and while that crashed to a halt in 2007, the DB9 continued in production at the new factory which Ford had built in Gaydon, Warwickshire, on the Ford-designed platform, but with a 5.9-litre V12 engine lifted from the Aston Martin Vanquish. Ironically, the first major overhaul of the DB9 coincided with the ending of Ford and Aston's partnership, and saw it given a major electrical revamp, as well as improved front seats.
The next upgrades concentrated on boosting the DB9's engine and adding a new centre console, and finally 2013 saw design tweaks which brought the DB9's look closer to the Virage, along with a further boost to the engine's output, to 510bhp and 620Nm of torque. For most of its life, the DB9 has been available as a hard-top, or Volante model, with a folding soft top. The car has been a huge critical success, with American motor magazine Edmunds.com saying of the interior in particular: "Words like 'rich' and 'crafted' just don't cut it, though 'decadent' and 'sculpted by the Almighty himself' get close".
