The Vantage name continues in use by Aston Martin around 70 years after it was first coined. In recent years the name has been applied to hand-built, high-performance variants of its most sporting models. V8 and V12-engined variants were produced and were succeeded by the latest generation to wear the model name in 2018. The first models had a 4.3-litre V8 engine, which was updated to a 4.7-litre unit after 2008. This engine features dry-sump lubrication, resulting in it being mounted lower in the engine bay for improved weight distribution.
Initially offered as a coupe, the Vantage Roadster convertible model followed on quickly from the hard-topped original, and while a six-speed manual gearbox was initially the only one offered, a new six-speed automated manual transmission was later made optional. "The Vantage name has come to stand for aggression, compactness and driver focus", says Autocar magazine, which afforded particular praise to its looks. "Few cars are as well-proportioned and eye-wateringly pretty as the Vantage," it said. "It includes all of the styling elements that made the DB9 such a success, but in a smaller frame."
