Mention the words ‘plug-in hybrid’, and it’s highly unlikely that the first car to spring to mind would be a near-1,000bhp supercar. But then, in Ferrari’s world, making such improbable technical feats a reality is what they’ve always been about. Launched while Italy was still in the teeth of COVID-19, the SF90 Stradale has the expected V8 turbo lump in place but shares the room under the car with three electric motors. These can propel the car to above 80mph, before the full force of the V8 - from the F8 Tributo - kicks in, and pushes the Stradale on to its claimed top speed of 211mph. In testing, this car achieved the fastest lap time ever around the company’s Fiorano test track.
The SF90 Stradale’s distinguishing feature is its twin rear wing, developed from findings gained in the company’s F1 programme, which creates hefty downforce at high speed to keep the car stable. Like many more mundane hybrids, the SF90 can run on electric power alone, or in a hybrid ‘Performance’ mode, in which the conventional engine feeds power back to recharge the batteries. The third mode called ‘Qualify’ is the ace up the car’s sleeve, which lets rip the full 769bhp of the V8.
The power is channelled through a new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Unusually, this has no reverse gear, as this is controlled through the two electric motors. The innovation on show in the Stradale led to it being called “a 986bhp technical masterpiece” by Autocar magazine, and while its electric-only range is just 15 miles, the critics reckoned that will get most owners to their nearest racetrack, where they’ll let the wonders of the massive amount of petrol-driven power take over.
