Testarossa is, without doubt, one of the most iconic supercar names - one which broke out beyond the exclusive audience for these cars, and became forever established as a lasting totem of the 1980s when actor Don Johnson drove one in the international hit TV show Miami Vice. The original Testarossa lasted from 1984 to 1991, but when it became due for replacement, the new cars became known under Ferrari’s more prosaic car numbering system as the 512 TR (the initials indicating that the car was a direct descendent of the classic Testarossa) and F512 M (in this case standing for ‘modificata’), and these were the final cars in that illustrious line. Both featured the in-line 12-cylinder engine which had been developed for the Testarossa, but their main enhancement was a better distribution of weight between the front and rear axles.

The Ferrari F512 M and 512 TR cars both inherited the side strakes, running all the way along the doors to the rear bumpers, which had become such a recognisable feature of the Testarossa. These let in air to cool the radiators found on each side of the mid-mounted engine and had the added benefit of resulting in the car being wider at the rear than at the front, and so benefiting its handling. Ferrari addressed complaints about the gear shift on original Testarossas in these cars by giving them a new clutch and altering the angle of the gearstick. Exterior elements of the car were updated along the lines of the intervening 348. The F512 M was the Testarossa’s swansong, with refinements that made it the lightest Testarossa ever. As a result, to help keep the car under control while accelerating, it was rev-limited to 7,500rpm.  For this final fling, out went the famous Ferrari pop-up headlights, to be replaced by fixed units. Inside, occupants could regulate the atmosphere for the first time in a Testarossa, thanks to standard air-con.
