Cars are like any other consumer product - they only last so long before they’re replaced by something newer and more in keeping with the times. But in formulating the successor to the F360, Ferrari had a mighty job. By the time a replacement became due, F1 had discovered the secret of downforce, and its ability to keep a car ‘fixed’ to the road. Engine technology had also moved on apace, so a completely new power plant was fitted. In itself, this was a major departure for Ferrari, as the first engine developed without input from the Dino family of V12 power plants which incorporated developments first seen in the 1950s.
Twenty per cent larger than its predecessor, the car nevertheless weighed just 4kg more - and that made all the difference in producing a car which has been described as “the most potent in a long line of V8 mid-engined ‘junior’ supercars”.
