The F8 landed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show as the replacement for the 488 at the end of its five-year life cycle. While it kept the 3.9-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine of its predecessor, this two-door car with a retractable hardtop became the most powerful V8 car Ferrari had given us to date, thanks to 'crikey' figures of 710bhp maximum power output, and torque of 568lb/ft coming in from a relatively civilised 3,250rpm. The F8's software underwent a major upgrade to enable it to juggle all the power and keep it in check using Maranello's latest traction and stability control technology. Forget where you are just momentarily, and you might even miss 100kmh (62mph) coming up from a standing start before you've even counted to three. 7.6 seconds past 120mph shows that the turbo V8 can, almost literally, breathe fire. But just to keep you from taking off completely, there's 15 per cent more downforce to call on than in the 488 GTB.
When the car is still, admirers can drool over the engine through a transparent, louvred cover, just as on an F40. Meanwhile, a wrap-around rear spoiler also features extra air intakes. "The F8 is a true tribute to mid-engined Ferraris gone by", said Alexander Stoklosa of Car & Driver magazine. It "looks to recapture the ephemeral beauty and drama that made ancestors such as the 360 Modena, F355, 308 and others so intoxicating." Safe to say that if you were bewitched by any of those earlier cars, the F8 was meant to provide you with your fix 2020s-style. Two years after its launch, EVO magazine revisited the F8 Tributo, and found it has "made a 710bhp, mid-engined Ferrari exploitable at the limit É a softer, slightly less focused car than the Pista but a usefully well-balanced and predictable one", and even (whisper it) "a refined, comfortable cruiser too, the engine note dropping to a murmur.
"As the last of the pre-hybrid, mid-engined V8s, it's a great high to go out on", concluded John Barker's five-star review. The era of the F8 is not long ended, but there are plenty of signs that the changes to follow in supercar propulsion technology might mean its significance will only continue to rise - along with its desirability.
