Following in the tyre-tracks of the massively successful 360, the Ferrari 430 was designed along the same lines - but took aerodynamic efficiency to new levels. Even though the aluminium chassis, roofline, doors and glass were carried over, Ferrari-watchers had no trouble telling them apart, mainly due to the door mirrors - styled on the legendary Testarossa - the open-mouthed front grilles redolent of F1 cars produced by the Prancing Horse in the 1960s, and tail lights and engine cover vents lifted straight from the Enzo supercar. Under the engine cover, however, it was a different story, the 430 packing the first completely new engine in almost 50 years, a 483bhp V8 tuned so that 80 per cent of its power was available at under 3,500rpm.
Computer technology has a big hand in keeping the 430 stable under all conditions, its electronic limited slip differential varying the amount of power and where it's applied depending on a variety of driving factors such as the angle the car is being steered at, and any sideways movement. The 430 was offered with either a six-speed manual or F1-style automated, paddle shift-operated transmission, and, after 2005, in a 'Spider' convertible variant with a folding metal roof. The extra weight clipped just 3mph off the hard-topped car's claimed 196mph top speed. A new cast iron alloy for the brakes helped with their cooling, while an optional ceramic composite brake set could retain the same performance after up to 360 laps of the Maranello test track.
