Mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, sideways-mounted engine. A formula which had served Ferrari very well over the previous two decades wasn't going to be altered when the time came to unveil the car which would usher in the new millennium for the Prancing Horse. Lighter yet stronger aluminium replaced the steel frame, and the curvy lines helped cut the car's weight by nearly 30 per cent compared with the 355 which it replaced. For the first time, Ferrari built race-ready versions of the 360 directly alongside the production models, rather than retrofitting cars already made.
Six-speed manual and an F1-style automated manual transmission were offered. The car was also designed with an open-topped version in mind, with all the underpinnings being purposely stiffened, which meant extra side members and strengthening in front of the engine were the main modifications needed to make this a reality. Best of all, the 3.6-litre V8 engine is on show for all to see, under a glass cover. The 360 competed successfully in the N-GT category of the FIA GT Championship, often driven by F1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham's son and Le Mans 24 hours winner, David, and was still being raced regularly around the world more than a decade after the car's introduction.
