The Lamborghini Murcielago might never have materialised had Audi not taken control of the Sant’Agata factory in 1998. As cars were increasingly built to meet certain environmentally-friendly criteria, there were doubts whether there was room in the future for cars with V12 engines whose mpg was often in single figures. But the clamour for an heir to the Diablo’s throne became such that Lamborghini was persuaded that there was an eager audience waiting for its first completely newly-designed car in more than a decade, and gave us the Murcielago in 2001.
The V12 in the first-generation Murcielago was a 6.2-litre which was capable of hitting 60mph from rest in 3.8 seconds. A 6.5-litre lump replaced it in 2006, which allowed the car to shave another 0.4 seconds off that sprint. All Murcielagos had a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with an electronically-controlled automatic as an option. The drama of the Murcielago is aided by driver and passenger entering and exiting through a pair of scissor doors. A Roadster version with a fabric roof came along in 2004, the roof being completely detachable and able to be carried around in a leather sports-type bag! The Murcielago LP 640 and LP 670 followed in 2006 and 2009 respectively, the numerical designation in each case denoting the uprated maximum power output of roughly 630 and 660bhp respectively.
