Maserati's designers had shown a concept SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011, but it would be another five years before it was to join the party with an in-the-flesh model. The Levante had a major job on its hands, tasked with boosting the company's sales figures after five disappointing years. It launched with just a three-litre, 271bhp diesel engine, but a more appealing 424bhp petrol unit came along - with an 'S' added to the badge - a little more than a year later. A more restrained three-litre, 345bhp petrol engine came out in mid-2018, and finally, a 523bhp GTS model, and a fire-breathing model with a Trofeo badge burst onto the scene a year later, packing a bigger, 3.8-litre twin-turbo putting out 572bhp.
Adaptive ride controls were an add-on, along with the customary heated seats, parking sensors and even leather seats and bigger alloys available with the GranSport or GranLusso option packs. Four-wheel drive capability can be called on when things get slippery to augment the standard powered rear wheels set-up.
