The Gallardo holds the distinction of being Lamborghini's all-time best-seller, with just over 14,000 of these supercars being snapped up by keen buyers between 2003 and 2013, before it was replaced by the Huracan. The car also sat as the only V10-engined model in the Lamborghini range, and given its stablemate, the Murcielago's, reliance on bigger, V12 engines, is often called the 'baby Lambo'. A choice of six-speed gated manual and hydraulically-powered single-clutch automated manual transmissions was available. The latter, known as an E-gear, engages gears more quickly than is possible through a manual setup.
After two years of taking feedback from customers, Lamborghini tweaked the 2005 Coupe, giving it a sportier exhaust, improved steering and suspension and, most tellingly, closer gear ratios to help boost acceleration. A Gallardo Spyder convertible model came along in 2006, marketed by Lamborghini as a completely new car, and boasting the 513bhp version of the engine first fitted into the Coupe. A final, Superleggera, or 'super-light' variant came along in 2007, the use of carbon fibre panels and fittings cutting 100kg (220lb) from the weight of the Coupe.
2008 saw a drastic update, which benefited from improved performance, yet also achieved a lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figure. The two gearbox options from the original Gallardo remained. Various limited-edition Gallardos were produced as the model neared its replacement date, most based on, or commemorating people involved in, the cars' track-racing exploits, while a handful of specially-adapted cars saw use with Italian police. Trim from parent company Audi means the Gallardo benefits from a hard-wearing interior, but it's under the bonnet where variations in how well the car has been looked after really tell.
