Even the most illustrious car brands have a model that they consider the entry-level to their range. Often, they can't help but become every bit as desirable as all the other supposedly more exotic models above them - and so it is with the Aston Martin DB7. It's a grand tourer, just the same as most other Astons - the main difference being that this is powered by a Jaguar-sourced in-line six-cylinder engine, and this model sits on the same platform as an XJS, albeit considerably modified.
When Jaguar turned down the design for a possible revamped version of its XJS - due mainly to its body being too heavy - Aston boss Walter Hayes seized his opportunity. He brought in his own chief designer to ensure that the car looked every centimetre an Aston - even though some parts were secretly taken from other models, such as the tail lights from a Mazda 323F, and the indicators from the MX-5!
None of this stopped the DB7 from getting rave reviews, prompting the newly incoming chairman of then-parent company Ford Europe to immediately order it to be put into production. So the DB7 entered the history books as the only Aston Martin to be produced from steel, rather than the standard aluminium used for the chassis and main body parts of its other models. And remarkably, it survived for 10 full model-year cycles before finally being supplanted by the DB9.
