So completely unlike the big and fast grand tourers for which the company has made its name, the Cygnet came about as a result of Aston Martin's efforts to bring the average emissions figures of its full range of models into line within limits required by the EU. It was a Toyota iQ city car with the Aston badge - having the same 1.3-litre in-line four-cylinder engine, producing 97bhp and being capable of nearly 59mpg.
But the Cygnet never got close to its ambitious sales targets, largely because it cost three times as much as the Toyota version, and was never made generally available outside the UK. About 300 Cygnets found owners around the world - about half of those in the UK - against an initial yearly target of 4,000. The Cygnet therefore has considerable cachet among a small band of owners, ensuring that those which remain in existence are being well cared for by enthusiasts of the marque.
