The GT2 variants are purists’ Porsches, with the rear-wheel-drive from classic 911s present and correct, but packing engines perked up by turbo power. The Mk2 models went on sale in 2007 following a launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The 3.6-litre flat-six cylinder engines remained, but the turbochargers were fitted with a means of varying their geometry so that the boost given was progressive and varied according to how much acceleration was being applied. With a maximum power up to 523bhp and torque of 680Nm on tap from as low down as 2,200rpm, the GT2 had a 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds.

Drivers in the lucky position of being able to keep that power on could hit a top speed of 204mph - making this the third production Porsche to top 200mph. The 997 GT2 was given a meaner look than its sister 997 Turbo by means of a new front lip, a revised rear wing with two small air inlets on either side and an updated rear bumper featuring titanium exhaust pipes and ‘shark fin’ outlets. The GT2 RS followed six months after the first model, with a notable increase in output to 612bhp, and 70kg in weight savings. Just 500 were produced worldwide, the original intention allegedly being for Porsche to reclaim the Nurburgring lap time record.
