The 997 model Porsche finally broke through into the mainstream when it finished a runner-up in the 2006 European Car of the Year awards. But was this a sell-out, or recognition that Stuttgart had given us a car which brought together all the virtues of previous 911s in a package which more people could live with day-to-day. The GT3 was the ‘entry-level’ car in a line-up that extended to three more, the GT3 RS and two more track-focused models, the GT3 Cup and GT3 RSR. That racing pedigree is evident right through the GT3, which is built on an ultra-stiff Carrera 4 platform, and the car makes wide use of aluminium and other lightweight composite materials.

The tweaked 3.6-litre naturally-aspirated engine was subjected to extensive research aimed at lowering its weight. As a result, its 409bhp can sling the GT3 from rest to 62mph in 4.3 seconds, and from then on it gives its best with the revs up around 4,000. The car revs right the way up to 9,000rpm, so shorter gear ratios don’t have a marked effect on progress between changes. Slowing the car down is thankfully safer and more predictable, thanks to its standard ceramic brakes. Overall, said EVO magazine, “the 997 GT3 is one of the best drivers’ 911s ever - fantastically tactile, irresistibly engaging and the standard fitment of adaptive suspension, traction control and air-conditioning all add to its appeal”. If you want Porsche aftermarket parts for your GT3, yet want to keep its weight down, there’s a vibrant market with specialists such as Cargraphic also using lightweight materials such as titanium to produce state-of-the-art exhaust systems.
