The 996 GT3 is a lightweight version of the standard 996 Carrera which, it’s said, was intended as a descendent of the 964 and 993 RS cars, given to the engineers at Porsche’s Motorsport division as a challenge to derive a worthy successor. They started by stripping out a host of internal equipment - including the back seats - and adding a lowered, adjustable suspension which was also stiffened, and had anti-roll bars added. Improved brakes and a limited-slip differential topped it all off. Introduced in 1999, it borrowed the bodyshell from the Carrera 4, which also gave the car extra front-end strength.

The engine was a non-turbocharged, 3.6-litre straight six-cylinder, derived from the 911 GT1 racing car, and putting out 355bhp. The engine is a dry-sump type, intended to handle the massive lateral forces usually experienced on a track. After all, this was the only place where owners can legally exploit this car’s 188mph top speed, and where the extra Clubsport option of a single-mass flywheel to help the engine spin faster, and a host of benefits offered by specialists offering Porsche aftermarket parts, could come into its own.
