It was generally recognised that the 996’s predecessor, the 911-993, had taken the capabilities of Porsche’s air-cooled, flat six engine to its limits. So, against the background of the Stuttgart company suffering financial troubles, it made a call to Toyota, and got it heavily involved in upgrading the Zuffenhausen factory to boost its efficiency. The new 996 was the first model to result from this collaboration, with only the suspension and six-speed gearbox kept from the 993. The car’s front end was borrowed from the Boxster - but was eventually modified after some Carrera owners wanted a more premium look, so from 2002, Porsche revised them, along the lines of those from the 996 Turbo. The high-strength steel chassis was a remarkable 50kg lighter and 45 per cent stiffer than its predecessor - a foundation on which plenty of specialist companies keenly built with Porsche aftermarket parts. Offered in coupe or cabrio form, the 996 Carrera had a 3.4-litre flat-six cylinder engine which developed 296bhp, which was squeezed up to the magic 300 figure for the last couple of years of production.
