Switching from a water-cooled to an air-cooled engine gave the 911 an injection of character, which was enhanced by the lower and sleeker lines. It’s good for a top speed of 180mph. The power goes down to all four wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox - another first for a 911 - while all-round ventilated disc brakes stop the car strongly yet predictably. Porsche’s engineers also addressed previous problems with oversteer when lifting off the power by giving this car a new light-alloy subframe and a multi-link, coil and wishbone suspension.
