Like all good cars, the story of the 911 Turbo begins with a racecar and the need to homologate it. In order to homologate their Group-4 934, and Group-5 935 Porsche put the 930 Turbo into production in 1975. At first it merely served the purpose of getting their race cars admitted into racing series, but since then the 911 Turbo has become a cornerstone of Porsche’s wide and varied array of rear engined sports cars.

The 992 Turbo was revealed in March of 2020; available in Turbo or Turbo S spec, the cars feature a twin-turbocharged, 3.7L flat-6 engine, producing 542hp and 641hp respectively. Both the stroke and compression ratios are down as compared to the 991.2, but the intake system and turbochargers have been enlarged to offset this. The end result is a car that can do 0-60 in a claimed 2.4s, although in practice Porsche often undersell quite how fast their cars are off the line…

With a Nürburgring lap time of 7:17.3 minutes, the 992 Turbo S is the third fastest road legal production vehicle on street tyres to ever take on the green hell, third only to the Nissan GT-R Nismo and the Lexus LFA Nürburgring package.

The turbochargers have been moved from the rear bumper to the engine bay for this generation, with the air filters taking their place. Porsche dynamic chassis control (PDCC), ceramic composite brakes, rear wheel steering, adaptive dampers and active anti-rollbars are now standard equipment.

Few other cars on earth are even in discussion when arguing about the best daily driver available today, face meltingly fast but poised and comfortable – the Turbo S is as at home on the motorway as it is on the race track, and that’s not a complement many other cars can have levelled at them.
