The 991 variant of the Porsche 911 was its seventh generation, and was introduced in 2011. It sat on an all-new platform, only the third to be used under the 911 in nearly half a century, but the groundbreaking stuff didn’t end there, as this was the first series-production car to get a seven-speed manual gearbox. The electro-mechanical power steering was also new, as was the adaptive suspension damping. Body panels were almost entirely made from aluminium, which shaved 45kg off the weight of the preceding 911s, yet made the car 20 per cent more rigid. The 3.4-litre engine used a shorter stroke than its predecessor, which puts the most useful power from it on tap between 4,500 and 7,400rpm, so provided you’re prepared to keep the revs reasonably high, you’ll enjoy skating along at a good lick. Ride quality of the 991 was more composed than some earlier 911s, and the new power steering didn’t do much to blunt the cars’ driving enjoyment. You’ve definitely got a plus if your car has the optional 18-way adaptive sports seats, although they do restrict some freedom of movement.
