Originally intended as a replacement for the 911 Turbo, and to sit above the 964 Carrera, the Porsche 911-965 was an unusual beast, in that it wasn’t the car which its makers had intended it to be. It had been meant to pick up from where the 959 had left off, and feature a straight-six cylinder engine with a twin-turbo and four-wheel drive. However, the car was a victim of the economic slump of 1987, and Porsche ordered the development programme for the 965 to be pared back. As a result, instead of a new engine, it inherited the version from the 911 Turbo of the time, while development continued on the new engine in the hope that it would come on stream as the economic outlook improved. So the 965 found itself with a place in history as the last air-cooled, rear-wheel drive and turbo-powered 911s. Its handling benefited from the fitting of a limited-slip differential - ironically an invention of Ferdinand Porsche himself more than half a century earlier. Heated sports seats, air-con, a sunroof and rear wash-wipe also made their way onto this car, as Porsche started to abandon its earlier ideas that creature comforts came second to the performance and handling technology used.
The 3.6-litre, six-cylinder engine shot the car to 60 from rest in 4.6 seconds, and had 360bhp available, with peak torque coming on stream at a fairly civilised 4,200rpm.
