Designer Benjamin Dimson gave the 911 a thorough working-over when he was tasked with the design in 1986, his most obvious change being to do away with the prominent separate piece bumpers, and mould them more to the shape of the car as a whole. More important, though, were the changes to the car’s suspension, with coil springs used for the first time. Power steering and anti-lock brakes were also new right across the range, with the option of a Tiptronic auto gearbox also offered new to this car - albeit only on the rear-wheel-drive Carrera 2 - and last but not least, a choice of four-wheel drive. The conventionally aspirated 911-964 had a 3.6-litre engine dropped into it, good for 247bhp, but the range was topped by a turbo model. That used the old model’s 3.3-litre lump, but produced 316bhp.
