The Devil-car - very, very few manufacturers could get away with giving this name to one of its products, but with Lamborghini, it helped make its intentions crystal-clear. As the Italian firm sought to channel the spirit of the Countach, it re-enlisted that car’s designer, Marcello Gandini. However, Lamborghini’s takeover by Chrysler in 1987 saw his designs considerably softened, earning the ire of Gandini himself.

What wasn’t in dispute was the continued use of the existing V12 engine in the middle of the car, powering the rear wheels only. Power steering saw its first use on a Lambo during the life of this car, while anti-lock brakes were only introduced part-way through its production run. Subsequently, the Diablo went through a number of reinventions, but whichever version you have in your collection, you’ll find that there’s an active market in Lamborghini aftermarket parts to help you enhance your car.

Four-wheel drive was finally introduced with the arrival of the Diablo VT in 1993, with a viscous centre differential transferring up to 25 per cent of torque to the front wheels when the rear ones start to lose their grip.  By 1999, Lamborghini was under Audi ownership, but an interim facelift bridged the gap pending the introduction of the Murcielago. This saw the Roadster and SV ditched, but in addition to 4WD, this model was also offered with rear-wheel drive only as an option.
