“We’ll never see the like of [the Porsche Carrera GT] again” bemoan the EVO scribes when reflecting on this car’s place in performance car history. They considered that its aim, of putting driving thrills front, left and centre, is being left behind as we look towards an increasingly electrified future. Yet you wouldn’t think that the V10 engine that eventually found its way into the Carrera GT started out as an aborted project for the Footwork F1 team in the early 1990s. It spent the rest of the decade in the shadows, yet still quietly being worked on. Then Porsche dropped plans to build a new car for Le Mans, and realised it was left with an engine which had nowhere to go - so the Carrera GT was its saviour.

A great reception at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show for the prototype car prompted Porsche to accelerate production plans, upping the original 5.5-litre capacity to 5773cc, adding a dry sump, and bolting the whole unit to the car’s carbon fibre chassis. Finally, the Carrera GT dispensed with fancy autos with paddle shifts and went back to a trusty old six-speed manual. Air-con and a sat-nav were the only real concessions to a 21st-century driving environment, as the Carrera GT was all about the power. “The Carrera GT is explosive, and you have to be disciplined with your throttle usage,” noted the EVO test reviewer. “You don’t so much drive [it] as play it like an instrument”.
