The 5 Series executive saloon was the first test-bed for a new breed of high-performance BMWs, the family which is now distinguished by that familiar ‘M’ prefix. When BMW took a modified engine from an M1 and fitted it to a standard 5 Series, the result was the fastest production saloon car built. That was in 1984, and demand for the M5 subsequently outstripped all forecasts, meaning that a second generation was immediately put on the drawing board. Initially hand-built, with each car taking two weeks to complete, this variant of the M5 stayed in production until late-1988, even though just over 2,200 were built - making this the rarest car produced by BMW Motorsport. The M5’s transition into relative mass production was assured, though, with the introduction in 1988 of the next-generation car, the last to feature the straight six-cylinder engines which had been fitted since the M5’s introduction. The car has remained in production to this day, although since 2017 it has broken with the BMW tradition of having rear-wheel drive, and now features the company’s all-wheel drive, or xDrive, powertrain.
