Crowned the 2012 Supercar of the Year by Top Gear magazine, the Ferrari F12 was the replacement for the 599 as the Prancing Horse’s signature Grand Tourer. Unveiled at Geneva in that year, it is an ‘old school’ Ferrari in the sense that it doesn’t use turbochargers or any other similar method to boost its performance. The 6.3-litre V12 engine was another critical success, taking the ‘Best Engine above 4.0 litres’ honour at the 2013 International Engine of the Year awards, as voted for by motoring journalists. The F12 stands as the fourth most powerful Ferrari road car ever (as of 2021), with its successor, the 812 Superfast, one of those surpassing it. Efficiency combined with power were the two qualities benchmarked in the engine’s making, the former aided by the use of Ferrari’s HELE start-stop system. The transmission is a seven-speed twin-clutch set-up with shortened gear ratios to help boost power delivery and keep the F12 moving along urgently.
The car’s traction control system is derived from that fitted in Ferrari’s F1 cars, with the various settings accessed via a dial on the steering wheel. Aerodynamic innovations include the Aero Bridge, a channel running from the bonnet and along the sides of the car, which recreates the effect of downforce on an F1 car. The downforce produced by this method is three-quarters as much again as with its predecessor. Several special editions of the F12 have been produced, including a roadster version, as part of commemorations of the 60th anniversary of Ferrari’s American business.
