Both the Ferrari 550 and Ferrari 575 are examples of the company’s forays into the two-seat grand tourer market, with cars intended for the autostrada and ploughing along winding mountain roads rather than the racetrack. While they remained two-seater cars, both were front-engined, and in grand tourer style, and unusually for Ferrari, had a boot in which you could feasibly stow enough luggage for a fortnight’s holiday for two - just about.

The 550 is historically significant in being the first Ferrari since the 1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona to have its engine mounted at the front of the car rather than in the middle. The 5.5-litre V12 engine produced 478bhp, and was attached to a six-speed manual gearbox, and could take the car up to a top speed of 199mph. Design company Pininfarina marked its 75th birthday in 2000 by producing a limited-run Barchetta (open top with no roof) variant, of which only 448 were made.

The 575 replaced the 550 in 2002 and broke more ground in being the first production 12-cylinder Ferrari to be fitted with a gearbox lifted straight from F1, and featuring a steering wheel-mounted paddle shift. Another feature ahead of its time on the 575 was adaptive damping, whereby the car’s computer independently controls the damping on all four corners of the car, with the driver able to choose between ‘sport’ and ‘comfort’ modes. We don’t bat an eyelid when we see such systems on modern cars, and it’s sobering that it was considered so far ahead of its time even at the start of this century.

Today, these cars are increasingly rare pieces of automotive history, and greatly benefit from being treated accordingly.
